3. A 57 year old man develops a red, swollen and tender area around the site of a central venous line. The infected area extends over a few days and he develops a fever, chills and nausea.

 

 

4. A 10 year old boy with sickle cell anaemia is admitted to hospital and requires treatment for a sickle cell crisis. Several days later he develops swollen painful skin over his thighs and imaging reveals multiple small abscesses in the underlying muscle.

 

 

5. A 35 year old man is in ITU and requires mechanical ventilation. On observation he is pyrexial and hypoxic. He is diagnosed with ventilator-associated pneumonia.
